Do social networks benefit us?

social media

I can even bet, but I am sure, that you have and use social media platforms. These days it’s hard to find a person who would not be involved in the digital world. It became a very big part of our lives nowadays. 1983 is considered the official “birthday” of the internet. Not so long time after social media platforms were created and started to grow very fast. This brought us communication freedom, fast information anytime, but at the same time, it created some problems. So, what are the benefits and disadvantages of using social media?

In my opinion, the best part of social media is that you can find information about whatever you want. Either if you need a recipe for the dinner or you want to know news about missions to space. Also, you can easily learn new things. There are a lot of things for which you need to pay, but you have access to many free apps, courses, or other things from which you can learn too. You have the ability to meet new people from all around the world, talk with your friends anytime through social media. However, it has disadvantages too. These days on the internet there is a lot of fake information. You need to choose your searching sources very carefully and critically. Meet new people online also can be dangerous because you would never know who is on the other side of the screen. Statistics show that around 275 million accounts on Facebook are bots, duplicates, or fake people. And this number increases every day.

The biggest problem is that social media has a negative impact on our mental health. It makes people addicted. This leads to anxiety, sadness, some people feel socially isolated, even depressed. It also has connections with a high flow of news, which some of them are not good; comparison themselves with celebrities/authorities who are, of course, showing the best life of them; after seeing corrected photos of people makes people feel not good enough about their own bodies.

Overall, for sure it is not a thing that can destroy your life. My advice would be just to not take everything very seriously, what you see on social media, and put a little bit more effort into finding true information.

In 2015 in Denmark there was made an experiment showed that taking a break from social media helps boost psychological well-being. So, if you feel that you would need it or you want to try a day without social media – do it, and maybe, you will feel better after!
