Romania ranks last in the EU on equality between men and women

According to a recent report from The World Economic Forum on equality of chances between men and women place Romania last in the European Union and 72nd worldwide. Even if the Romanian law recognizes the equality of chances between men and women, the traditions in Romania regarding this topic are still very present. This represents a huge problem for the Romania society vis-a-vis the empowerment of Women.

Moreover, this trend can also be understood by analysing the government formation a few years ago: although Romania’s Government has a total of 44 ministers, only 2 of them are women. The situation is similar at the Constitutional Court, where only 2 of the Court’s 9 judges are women.

Even if Romanian political leaders claim that work has been done to empower woman, there is room to improve and a lot. Being last the EU ranking on equality between men and women is a strong sign that there’s still much progress to be done.

Empowering women is to give women the right. Women can have an equal right to participate in education, society, economy and politically. It is now more than ever important to work hard on this topic because empowerment helps to reduce domestic violence due to people promote and give value to women. Hence, women’s empowerment is all about allowing and equipping women to make life-determining choices across different issues in the country.
